Denver combined City and County Government. The Mayor is elected on a non partisan ballot, The city council consists of 13 seats and an auditor. The Denver city Council is elected from 11 districts. Two city council seats are, “at-large”. They are responsible for creating and changing and passing all laws. They also authorize misconduct investigations for all employees, contractors, and officials working for the City of Denver. Denver has a strong Mayor, weak city council.

Denver has over 200 parks. Denver’s parks range from small, neighborhood, “mini parks”, to huge parks spanning over 300 acres. Denver also has some mountain parks that are over 14,000 acres Most people don’t know it but the Winter park ski area is actually part of the City of Denver and it is actually a very incredible yet affordable ski area that also hosts concerts and other activities year round. By far the most famous mountain park of Denver is Red Rocks amphitheater. Red Rocks is known all over the world and is the favorite tour stop of many musicians and groups. Denver also has 28 recreation centers hosting everything from weightlifting, tennis, and Olympic size swimming pools. Denver also has many bike trails. Denver is a fitness minded city. The city of Denver encourages bicycles as a means to commute to work.

Denver is the 27th most populous city in the USA. Denver-Aurora-Boulder as a statistical area is the 17th most populous metropolitan area in the USA. Denver is the most populous city in the State of Colorado. The racial makeup of Denver is 82.9% White (50.3% excluding Latinos), 10.6% Black, 3.1% Asian, 1.4% Native American, 1.9% mixed races. 34.7% of the population of Denver proper is Latino of any race. These figures are from the 2005 Census and may not include illegal aliens or undocumented workers residing in Denver.
Economy of Denver, ColoradoDenver enjoys a good strategic location between the large cities of the Midwest such as Chicago and Detroit and the West Coast. Because of the location of Denver it is a natural location and hub for the mountain states. Denver is the largest city with 600 miles of itself. Denver is hub for the Federal government and Colorado boasts some very large military installations including the Air Force Academy, Fort Carson and Buckley installations. Norad also calls Colorado home. Denver is also located near some very important mineral reserves and the carbon based energy industry is an integral part of the economy of Denver Colorado. Mining is also a large industry with deep roots in Denver’s economy.
In the past two decades the emergence of satellite industries had their impact on Denver with the telecommunication industry. Because of Denver’s location on the 105th Meridian and the fact that Denver is one mile higher than most cities in the nation, Denver offers a “single bounce” real time satellite link to over six continents. That said Denver has always been subject to, “boom and bust” cycles ever since the gold rush days in the mid-1800’s.

The city of Denver has a very good grid system aligned to the cardinal directions. The streets are numbered by the hundreds and are preceded by a direction. The 00 streets are Broadway for East West and Ellsworth for North South. The downtown has an older grid system that is aligned with the Platte River and Cherry Creek. The older grid system is argued by many to better than the new, because it helps with snowmelt in the winter because the streets receive more sunlight in this orientation and snow melts much faster.
Highways of Denver, ColoradoDenver is located a few miles south of the intersection of I-25 and I-70. I-225 connects the two again by crossing through Aurora to the East of Denver. I-76 Connect I-70 and I-25 again North of the city of Denver. There is a beltway series know as “470” or C-470 and E-470. US36 serves to connect Denver to Boulder.
Mass transit of Denver, ColoradoThe Denver-Aurora Metropolitan area is managed through the RTD, or Regional Transportation District. RTD operates light rail and has over 1000 buses. Amtrak services Denver through Union Station. The 16th street mall in Denver is adjacent to the Denver Convention Center and The Denver Center for the Performing Arts is serviced by the mall ride, which is free. Denver also operated a ski train to Winter Park.
Airport of Denver, ColoradoDenver International Airport is the tenth most used airport in the USA. Over 47,000,000 passengers used the facility in 2006. It is the largest airport in the United States by land area.
